Weather for Motorbike Riding on Thailand's West Coast — Phuket & Krabi

Thailand's west coast faces the Andaman Sea and follows a seasonal pattern that is the reverse of the Gulf coast — the best riding months are November through April, and the monsoon arrives from May onward. Phuket and Krabi are two of Thailand's most visited destinations — the coastal roads, limestone karst scenery and turquoise water make for some of the most visually spectacular riding in the country.

The Two Seasons of the Andaman Coast

Dry Season — November to April

The dry season is when the Andaman coast is at its absolute finest. Skies are clear, roads are dry, and the coastal roads are bathed in warm sunshine. Temperatures range from 28 to 34°C. November through February are the coolest and most comfortable months.

Monsoon Season — May to October

The southwest monsoon arrives from May onward, bringing the heaviest and most sustained rainfall in Thailand. Unlike the Gulf coast where rain typically arrives in the afternoon, the Andaman monsoon can bring rain at any time of day — requiring more flexibility and patience from riders. The west coast in the monsoon season has a wild, dramatic beauty — the limestone karsts of Krabi look extraordinary under storm clouds, the roads are quiet and accommodation prices drop significantly.

Best Months to Ride on the West Coast

November through February are the standout months. March and early November are excellent shoulder season options — fewer crowds, still excellent conditions, noticeably better accommodation prices.

Making the Most of the Monsoon Season

The Andaman monsoon requires a different mindset — rain can arrive at any time rather than following a predictable afternoon pattern. Start each day early, check the sky before you ride, and always carry a waterproof jacket within easy reach. The rewards are real — accommodation prices drop significantly, the famous beaches and viewpoints are quiet, and the limestone karst scenery of Krabi under monsoon clouds is genuinely dramatic and beautiful. On heavier rain days, embrace the slower pace — Krabi Town and Phuket's old town are excellent places to spend a morning or afternoon when riding is not the priority.
