Renewing a Thai Driver's License — Everything You Need to Know

The Thai driver's license renewal process is more straightforward than the initial application — particularly if your driving record is clean. Here is everything you need to know about converting your temporary license and renewing beyond that.

The Two-Year Temporary License

Every new Thai driver's license begins as a temporary private driver's license valid for 2 years. If the driver has not committed any traffic violations during this time, they can convert their temporary license to a private driver's license valid for 5 years.

Converting to a 5-Year License

At the end of your 2-year temporary period, visit your local DLT office to convert to the full 5-year license. You will need to complete a short theory training session — this can be done at the DLT office or online through the DLT e-Learning system before your appointment. No practical driving test is required for the conversion.

Documents required for conversion:

Renewing the 5-Year License

To continue driving in Thailand, the private driver's license must be renewed every 5 years. The renewal process requires the same documents as the conversion above, plus completion of the theory training component. There is no restriction on travel during the renewal period.

Renewing Online — DLT e-Learning

Theory training for renewal can be completed online through the DLT e-Learning system at dlt-elearning.com before your DLT appointment. Select the "For Foreigner" option on the login screen to access English-language content. The training covers traffic laws, safe driving practices, driving awareness and etiquette, hazard perception, emergency procedures and first aid.

Driving with an Expired License

Driving with an expired, suspended, revoked or confiscated driver's license is a legal offence in Thailand. Do not let your license lapse — the renewal process is straightforward and the DLT e-Learning option makes the theory training component easy to complete on your own schedule.

If Your License Has Been Expired for More Than a Year

If it has been over 3 years since your license expired, you will have to pass both the theory and practical exams again. The closer to expiry you renew, the simpler the process — do not leave it too long.
