The International Driving Permit is the simplest and most practical solution for visitors who want to drive or ride legally in Thailand without going through the full Thai license process. Here is everything you need to know.
What is an IDP?
An International Driving Permit — also known as an International Driving License — is a document that allows the holder to drive legally in countries other than their home country. It is not a standalone license — it must always be carried alongside your original home country driving license. Think of it as an official translation of your home country license into multiple languages, recognised by countries party to international road traffic conventions.
Does Thailand Recognise IDPs?
Yes. Thailand recognises International Driving Permits under two international conventions:
- Convention on Road Traffic — Geneva, 19 September 1949: Valid for 1 year from the date of issuance or the expiration date of the domestic driver's license, whichever is earlier.
- Convention on Road Traffic — Vienna, 8 November 1968: Valid for up to 3 years from the date of issue or the expiration of the driver's license within the country of residence.
The validity period of your IDP depends on which convention your home country is party to. Check with your national motoring organisation or automobile association when applying.
Important Rules for IDPs in Thailand
- An IDP must be applied for in the same country that issued your original driving license — you cannot obtain one in Thailand
- It must always be carried alongside your original home country driving license — the IDP alone is not valid
- Your IDP must include a motorcycle endorsement to legally ride a motorbike — a car-only IDP does not cover motorcycle riding
- Car-only IDPs used for riding a motorcycle result in immediate fines if stopped
How to Get an IDP
IDPs are issued by national motoring organisations and automobile associations in your home country:
- UK — AA or RAC
- USA — AAA (American Automobile Association)
- Australia — NRMA, RACQ, RAA or equivalent state body
- Germany — ADAC
Apply before you travel to Thailand — the process typically takes a few days and requires a valid driving license, passport photos and a small fee.
