Before gathering documents or booking a DLT appointment, it is worth confirming that you meet the eligibility criteria for a Thai driver's license. The requirements are straightforward for most applicants.
Age Requirements
From the official Department of Land Transport guide:
- Motorcycles and scooters: Minimum age 15 years
- Cars: Minimum age 18 years
The first license issued is a temporary private driver's license valid for 2 years.
Health and Fitness Requirements
Applicants must:
- Have the necessary knowledge and skills to drive
- Not have any visible physical disability that would impair driving
- Not have any medical condition deemed potentially dangerous while driving, as assessed by a licensed medical professional
- Not be of unsound mind or mentally unstable
In practice, the medical check is handled by a medical certificate from any registered clinic or hospital — a 10 to 15 minute visit costing 100 to 300 baht depending on the clinic. The doctor checks blood pressure, asks a brief medical history and runs a vision test. For most applicants under 60 it is a procedural formality. The certificate must be issued within one month of your DLT application date.
Visa and Residency Requirements
You need a passport with a valid Non-Immigrant Visa, a Medical Certificate, and a Certificate of Residence to apply for a Thai motorcycle or car license as a foreigner. Tourist visa holders generally cannot apply — the DLT requires proof of residency in Thailand, which typically means a Non-Immigrant visa (work, retirement, marriage, education or similar).
Who Can Convert a Foreign License
Foreigners have two main ways to get a Thai driver's license: convert an existing international or national license into a Thai one, or pass the full driving license test at the DLT.
If you hold a valid foreign license for the same type of vehicle you are applying for in Thailand, the conversion process is significantly faster — you may be exempt from the practical driving test and only required to complete a shorter theory training session and physical fitness tests. A foreign car license does not qualify you to convert to a Thai motorcycle license — they are separate categories and require separate applications.
