Bangkok
The Gulf Coast Run is Bangkok's most accessible escape route — a ride southwest from the capital along the Gulf of Thailand that passes through royal seaside towns, a spectacular national park and one of Thailand's most charming floating market towns on the way home. Easy roads, excellent food, beautiful coastline and enough variety to keep every day interesting.
Bangkok to Cha-am
Route 35 and then Route 4 southwest — approximately 200km from Bangkok. Cha-am is a quiet, unhurried beach town popular with Thai families and Bangkok weekenders. Long beach, casuarina trees, small seafood restaurants.
Recommended stop: Cha-am beachfront guesthouses — relaxed overnight option before Hua Hin.
Cha-am to Hua Hin
Less than 30 minutes south on Route 4. Hua Hin has been a royal retreat since the 1920s. The old town, the night market, the fishing pier and the famous Hua Hin Railway Station are all worth exploring. Long, wide, well-maintained beach.
Recommended stop: Old town and fishing pier area — guesthouses within walking distance of the night market and beach.
Hua Hin to Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park
Route 4 south then inland on Route 3168 — approximately 60km south of Hua Hin. Khao Sam Roi Yot (Mountain of Three Hundred Peaks) is a dramatic landscape of limestone hills, freshwater marshes and caves rising from the Gulf coast.
Phraya Nakhon Cave — a dramatic cavern with a royal sala pavilion lit by natural light through a ceiling opening. Requires a short boat trip and steep hike. One of the most extraordinary sights in Thailand.
Recommended stop: Small guesthouses near the park entrance — allows early morning access to the cave and marshes.
The Return — via Amphawa
Return via Route 4 north, then inland to Amphawa — a canal-side market town in Samut Songkhram Province with a famous floating market operating on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings. Local vendors selling freshly cooked food from boats, longtail boat trips to see fireflies, genuine community atmosphere.
Return to Bangkok on Route 35 — approximately one to one and a half hours.
Recommended stop: Canal-side guesthouses on stilts over the water — stay overnight for the floating market evening and quiet canal morning.
Tips for Riding the Gulf Coast Run
- The Amphawa Floating Market only operates Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings — plan your return day accordingly
- Phraya Nakhon Cave requires a boat and a hike — allow at least half a day and start early
- Hua Hin is popular with Bangkok weekenders — arrive on a weekday for quieter roads and better accommodation prices
- Return to Bangkok via Amphawa rather than the direct motorway — the extra hour is worth it every time
