Northern Thailand is where many riders fall in love with motorbike travel. The roads twist through mountain passes, valley floors and ancient temple towns in a way that simply can't be experienced from a bus window. Chiang Mai is the natural starting point — it has the widest selection of bikes and the most established rental shops. The shops listed on this page have been selected based on reputation, reliability and quality of bikes and service. We only recommend shops we would rent from ourselves.
Chiang Mai
Chiang Mai is the motorbike rental hub of the north, with the widest selection of bikes and shops to choose from. Whether you're planning the Mae Hong Son Loop, heading up toward the Golden Triangle, or simply exploring the surrounding valleys and temples, the north is where some of Thailand's most rewarding riding begins.

Mae Hong Son
Mae Hong Son is a small, remote town with very limited rental options. The honest recommendation for riders planning the Mae Hong Son Loop is to rent in Chiang Mai and ride out — all three Chiang Mai shops listed above are familiar with the route and well set up for it. If you are already in Mae Hong Son and need local wheels, rental options exist near the town centre and around Chong Kham Lake. Inspect any bike carefully before renting and confirm insurance arrangements.
